After reading the game, I had assumed that after (and/or during) failing at a career, a character accrued multiple debts which had been bought out by the current debtholder. These debts were then bundled with those of other characters to basically force them to go treasure-hunting as a group (since solo treasure-hunters probably tend to die before paying off much of their debt). I was thinking that debtholders are possibly more interested in getting their hands on interesting treasures rather than just getting cash.
